Shooting Space

Great book

Recommended by Mr Ant Chambers

Reminded me of a few images I took last year

Sat in a diner on the A19 - 'Route 66'
Full english for just over a fiver
was awesome

Reminds me I need to go back and actually photograph the diner - it looks fantastic

Anyway - this was my view from my table.

Another great project, captivating and instilled me with motivation.

A great body of work

The image reminded me of one of my site images

Helps to highlight where I can improve with my technique, maybe increasing my aperture to get the trees a little sharper.

Distance from the subject, maybe increase a little  - although I did intend to fill the frame with my subject, whilst capturing the blue, greens and red.

Latest Prints

Spent a good number of hours trying to improve my colour printing

After putting my latest prints next to my minor submission prints I was blown away, I don't think I've ever printed this well before.

I was even consistent with the sky.

The scans don't really give the true effect.

The prints were done on 10x12 paper for my book, which will be part of my final submission - fingers crossed.

Taking everything in to consideration from my feedback, I've tried incorporate all the advice.

The compositions chosen, I personally, do not think would have worked as well in black and white.

After closer inspection, this will be the only re-print due to a small shadow in the bottom left hand corner.

Overall very pleased with my first printing session for my major project.

Tiny Trades

Building Blocks of Life
Starting off by setting up a small Irving Penn studio and testing the lighting over a 5 second exposure.

Can't really use flash on such a small subject.

So a small torch has to be used, although the shadow was a bit crisp.

Turning the subject slightly added a better feel.

Trying to keep the image within the keeping of Irving Penn - dark and moody.

Trying to achieve my desired look by moving the torch around during exposure, trying to gain a little more contrast.

But asking her to stay still for the full 5 seconds is quite a task - a rapport had to be established with my subjects.

Plus I had to pay her using my plastic.

Change of subject - and quite liking the little touch of colour. Maybe could be a little twist - bringing Irving Penn's look in to the present.

Maybe even a little feel of August Sander emerging.

A little bit more work and it may be ready to attempt on film.

Research

Looking at other photographers current work, how they set up their website etc

http://www.michaelmolloy.co.uk/architectural-photography.html

Typical example, nicely set up site with some good inspirational images, for me the draw was the industrial and construction projects.

Inspiration

TV Adverts

A hand full of photographers spring to mind, an almost classic pose and yet a contemporary feel - you can see a photographer was involved with the direction.
Just my opinion

Inspiration

Ocean's 13

Not just portraiture inspiration, but landscape.
Since my first year of contextual studies with Francis - films have never been the same
I have had to watch all my Favourite films again, but from a different view point - it's mind blowing what my eyes have been opened up to - curse you Francis Fitzgerald

The 20 most expensive photographs of all time are worth millions

The $6.5m canyon: it's the most expensive photograph ever – but it's like a hackneyed poster in a posh hotel

F-stop printing chart

If this is anything to go by, it's going to take some getting used to.

Gene Nocon

Does not really tell you much about f-stop printing, but was still interesting.

Latest books for research

A book by Gene Nocon, founder of F-stop printing.
Using the theory of f-stop rather than time for printing, it is supposed to give more control, working more on density within your final print
It uses the same theory as the settings on your camera.
Not used this theory before, but worth a try, specially as it is the theory used to create your negative in the first place?

Again a book for printing, even though I am mainly doing the final major project in colour, with an exhibition in mind - I would like to print some black and white.

Got both books for 5 quid, bargain, including postage.

The vernacular of the office

These were taken on the olympus.
Really not sure why I'm drawn to taking images such as these.
But the colours, or lack of colour for me just add to the image.

Camera flash used to bring a little more detail out

How I spend my days

Walking around the office

This image taken on my canon 6D

The next 2 images taken on my olympus OMD 5

The canon is a full frame camera, whilst the olympus is a micro 4/3.

I like to use both and compare quality and colours.

Low Motivation

One of the first photography books I ever bought.
Was in contact with Ricky quite a lot through emails when I first got a camera 4 years ago, and got a signed print off him when he sent me the book.
It's at times like these when motivation is at it's lowest, confidence way down, sat, can't be arsed, nothing going quite right - you think of jacking it all in, asking yourself why? Why am I doing this, why do I bother, am I any good etc etc.
I get this book out and get right back to basics, sit with my cameras, playing with all the settings taking photos of everything around me, just looking through his images, looking through his website.

Image by Ricky Adam, from the above book.

I re-read hid Bio, where he started out, what he has achieved, his publications, his passion and tenacity for photography. The people he photographs who keep getting back up.
You start to get that yearn back, you start looking through your own images, you start to enjoy your own images once again.

You start to think of all the projects you want to do and why you haven't done them.
You do them for yourself, because you want to, because you enjoy it.

Martin Schoeller - Close Ups
Limited edition with a signed and numbered print

This book is my favourite at the moment, I could just spend hours looking at each individual image.

All images are taken the same, distance, lens etc.

Images that really nobody else could have captured of that time.
Fish Work by Corey Arnold

Beautiful book

Latest books

Original price 8/6 net
A first edition from 1959 by Andre Deutsch Ltd

All black and white images, full page, no borders
A5 size book

Quirky little book, which in this day and age would be difficult to replicate.

Legs That Dance to Elmer's Tune

A brown corduroy / material cover and the book comes in an actual stocking.

Pornography?
Art?
Fetish?

For me personally the book is a complete different genre, does not fall in to a category that I would envisage that my photography would ever follow. But as a book itself is a talking point.

1982

Old book, but still can give inspiration, all black and white images.
